Youth Testimonials

“It was good to talk about all of the things I’ve been through. It helped me speak my mind and get my thoughts out. It made me feel better about myself because sometimes you can’t always hold stuff in. It was good getting it out and talking about it.”

“When I look back at my story, I realize how far I have come from being a very emotional kid to being a very positive and happy person.”

“Something positive I got out of my story was that it helped me heal. I don’t have to second-guess my thoughts or feelings. Me writing a book with the help of my therapist helped me in many ways. My book helped me to open up and talk about things. This book was the start to my healing process. It was hard, but as it came to an end, it gave me a positive reason to keep going.”

“The book reminds me…when I first open it…of pain, abuse. When I get past those chapters, I see my success, my achievements. Sometimes I have to go back to that book. I look back and I say to myself ‘Look y’all, I made it.’ I have to go to the end of the chapters to remember the good. Because the beginning is always going to have the pain and the hurt in it. The book lets me know that I survived. It lets me know that I can keep surviving. I just have to remind myself.”

Laure Biron, MSS, LCSW, MSLP, MFA

“Meagan is a smart and sensitive teacher.  The Storiez training provided a sophisticated yet graspable overview of trauma, some of the popular trauma treatments available, and the concepts that underpin the Storiez intervention.  Storiez is a sensitive, informed, and modern intervention that takes into consideration evidence, neuroscience, and the treatment needs of current youth.  With a low barrier for points of entry, it’s useful for a wide variety of clients in various different situations and offers the potential for those who participate an opportunity to process at their own pace, in their own medium and language and using their sense of creativity and individuality as a vehicle for that expression.  This unique way of working with clients around issues related to trauma is forward-thinking, creative, and in line with the needs and interests of young people.”

Sandra Bloom, MD

“When I met Meagan and saw the work that she was doing, I loved it immediately.  I was impressed by the clarity, beauty, and coherence of the materials she was creating.  The materials themselves drew people into completing the narrative process.  I can’t say more positive things about Storiez and what it means.  I think about how effective it can be to help people heal from traumatic experiences.”

Kevin Carter, LCSW

“The Storiez curriculum actually helps to build narratives.  It helps young people really try to find a safe way to figure out what their story actually is, and it helps them own the story in a way that is helpful to them.  Through Storiez, youth realize, ‘So I’ve had this difficulty in my life.  It’s not the end of my life, but I also have the capacity to overcome a death, overcome a loss.  Overcome the things that happened to me.  And I can figure out how to heal myself.”

Nancy Lovelady, MS, BA

“As a teacher of 25 years in an urban setting in California, I found Dr. Meagan’s approach to be fresh and innovative.  I have worked in a variety of school settings, usually focusing on the most challenging of students.  I recently used the Storiez approach when working with students on a novel.  We first read the noel and applied the Storiez approach…deconstructing the main character’s story, as a means for examining motives for the character’s actions and reactions with others characters in the novel, and discussing how the character might have coped more efficiently to improve his relationships with others around him.  As an extended activity, students were asked to write their own story, highlighting one ‘chapter’ in their lives, mirroring our work in class.  Students were to focus on how one traumatic event shaped their relationships with others, for better or worse, and how they could build on that to improve their relationships with not only others but themselves.  As a whole, students really enjoyed this project because it was tied to the novel, but was also about helping them work through issues of their own.  I highly recommend the approach to other teachers because all our children have their story!”

Nadia Malik

“In social work school, we learned a lot about trauma and how it effects people and how that comes about in clients, but Storiez helped me understand trauma more.  It made me understand it in a way that I could talk to my clients about it. And even if I’m not using the Storiez intervention with a client, it’s a great way for me to understand what their background might be and how that is affecting any of the issues that have come up for them.  Sometimes it’s not easy to talk to a clinician or get feelings out.  Storiez is great because it gives clients an avenue to express themselves through writing, through art and really get out what they’re feeling.  It helps us work together a little bit better.”

Shaniqua Pierce-Johnson, LCSW

“I needed to find something that was culturally sensitive to the students that I worked with but could also heal a lot of the trauma and adversity that they were facing.  I came across Dr. Corrado’s Storiez workbook and immediately fell in love with it…It teaches students that it’s okay to heal.  It’s okay to have difficult conversations—especially when a lot of the time our students are not allowed to have their voices heard.”
